San Juan is starting to develop into a tourist destination but is still a rather wild, corrupt town and Kemp soon falls into a routine of almost constant inebriation among his fellow journalists, a mix of burn outs, chancers and wasters. The story follows journalist Paul Kemp, who in the late 1950s moves to San Juan in Puerto Rico to work for the local English language paper. Written in the early ’60s the book remained unpublished until the late ’90s. Hunter S Thompson is one of my all time favourite writers and personal heroes, and I have a lot of love for his twisted, dark style, so I was curious to see what his long lost novel would be like.
